Tour to Fayoum Oasis From Cairo
Fayoum
The experience
Overview
Head southwest from Cairo into the Fayoum depression, an oasis region fed by canalization engineered as far back as the Middle Kingdom. Your first stop is Wadi el-Rayan Protected Area, where two man-made desert lakes meet in Egypt's only waterfalls — an improbable curtain of water cascading between palm-fringed dunes, perfect for swimming and photography.
Continue by 4x4 deeper into the protected area to Wadi el-Hitan, the UNESCO World Heritage Valley of the Whales. Here, along a walking trail among wind-carved rocks, lie the fossilized skeletons of Basilosaurus isis: forty-million-year-old whales that once swam over what is now open desert. The open-air museum and small fossil exhibit tell one of evolution's greatest stories.
Time and energy permitting, take a short desert drive to the Magic Lake, a mineral-blue pool ringed by dunes ideal for a quick swim and sandboarding. On the way home, stop at Tunis Village for its renowned pottery workshops and a lakeside lunch of fresh tilapia from Lake Qarun, Egypt's oldest natural lake.
