Journey some 800 kilometers from Cairo or a shorter hop from Marsa Matrouh to Siwa, a green thumbprint of palm groves and springs ringed by desert. On arrival, settle into a charming eco-lodge built of kershef — the local salt-mud architecture that keeps rooms naturally cool — and watch your first sunset from the ruins of Shali Fortress, the 13th-century mud-brick citadel at Siwa Town's heart.
Day two belongs to the desert. Bathe in the bubbling spring said to have refreshed Cleopatra herself, float effortlessly in the blinding-white salt lakes where buoyancy rivals the Dead Sea, and climb into a 4x4 for an adrenaline run across the dunes of the Great Sand Sea. Try sandboarding down the slopes, then soak in Bir Wahed, a hot sulfur spring in the middle of nowhere, as the sky ignites at dusk.
On your final day, ascend Gebel el-Mawta, the Mountain of the Dead honeycombed with tombs, and visit the Temple of the Oracle where Alexander the Great trekked to consult Amun in 331 BC. Browse olive oil and date products at a women's cooperative before the scenic drive back, carrying memories of Egypt at its most otherworldly.
